Description

In this “absolutely brilliant, tension-filled tour de force” (Brad Thor) from New York Times bestselling author Terry Hayes, CIA spy Kane confronts an evil that could bring the world to a cataclysmic end.

If, like Kane, you’re a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again—by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide—and when to shoot.

But some places don’t play by the rules. Some places are too dangerous, even for a man of Kane’s experience. The badlands where the borders of Pakistan, Iran, and Afghanistan meet are such a place—a place where violence is the only way to survive.

Kane travels there to exfiltrate a man with vital information for the safety of the West—but instead he meets an adversary who will take the world to the brink of extinction. A frightening, clever, vicious man with blood on his hands and vengeance in his heart.

  • Weird turn

Was great for 3/4 of the book, then a weird turn almost like someone else wrote it. Not on par with I am Pilgrim. Very well written though.

Loved Hayes’ first book, and was excited to start this one. And parts of it are great, page after page of perfect suspense. If I’m being honest though, the book veers completely off the rails about two-thirds in. It recovers to have a solid ending, but this book simply doesn’t know what it wants to be. It could have been a great spy thriller but winds up an odd mishmash of sci-fi and spy novel. Just odd

Love the story telling of this author. This one takes a bit of a wild turn, but enjoyed it nonetheless the less.

Way too long. Jumped the Sharkey about half way and totally predictable. First half v well done.

Pretty good. Loved his first. Without spoiling anything, his explanation of the undoing of the wild turn at the end of the book was nonexistent. So he lost me. Fascinating idea. Tough to execute.

I have read books for years, this is by far the best book I have ever read. Thank you, a wonderful, intense book!

This is solid storytelling and you can imagine you are in the story seeing in detail what’s happening. It’s suspenseful and thrilling and I would have given it 4 stars had the story kept its path. But it didn’t. Bending light turned into traveling into the future. It just got weird at that point. Maybe the first book had the same themes. I haven’t read the first book so I was caught off guard.
  • A wide gap between his first novel and this one.

A wide gap between his first novel and this one. But a fine enough pulp fiction for an airplane… or (invisible) submarine

I really liked “I Am Pilgrim” and was looking forward to reading this book. It jumps in such disjointed steps from ultra reality to unconvincing science fiction that my head is still spinning. The writing is excellent but the story is impossibly incoherent
