Description

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A GMA BOOK CLUB PICK • A NEW YORK TIMES BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR (SO FAR) • A traditional American woman, a “tradwife” influencer, suddenly awakens in the brutal reality of 1855—where she must unravel whether this living nightmare is an elaborate hoax, a twisted reality show, or something far more sinister in this sensational debut novel.

"A bold and biting satire, Yesteryear…will have you cackling and gasping right to the final page."
—Nita Prose, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Maid series

My name was Natalie Heller Mills, and I was perfect at being alive.

Natalie lives a traditional lifestyle. Her charming farmhouse is rustic, her husband a handsome cowboy, her six children each more delightful than the last. So what if there are nannies and producers behind the scenes, her kitchen hiding industrial-grade fridges and ovens, her husband the heir to a political dynasty? What Natalie’s followers—all 8 million of them—don’t know won’t hurt them. And The Angry Women? The privileged, Ivy League, coastal elite haters who call her an antifeminist iconoclast? They’re sick with jealousy. Because Natalie isn’t simply living the good life, she’s living the ideal—and just so happens to be building an empire from it.

Until one morning she wakes up in a life that isn’t hers. Her home, her husband, her children—they’re all familiar, but something’s off. Her kitchen is warmed by a sputtering fire rather than electricity, her children are dirty and strange, and her soft-handed husband is suddenly a competent farmer. Just yesterday Natalie was curating photos of homemade jam for her Instagram, and now she’s expected to haul firewood and handwash clothes until her fingers bleed. Has she become the unwitting star of a ruthless reality show? Could it really be time travel? Is she being tested by God? By Satan? When Natalie suffers a brutal injury in the woods, she realizes two things: This is not her beautiful life, and she must escape by any means possible.

A gripping, electrifying novel that is as darkly funny as it is frightening, Yesteryear is a gimlet-eyed look at tradition, fame, faith, and the grand performance of womanhood.

So sad and twisted. Mental illness is no joke.
  • Can’t believe this has so many good reviews

From the on set the main character is unlikable. It is extremely/fanatically religious. It doesn’t always make sense…..such as why the main character didn’t stick up for herself (tough to explain without spoilers). Best part to me was the epilogue.

Disturbing, hard to believe, odd, extreme yet insightful and provocative at the same time. Need tough skin to power through. Very original and calculated approach to some deep questions re the impact of creating personas and engaging with unknown people via social digital media. Proceed with caution!

Wanted to love it but the ending is so implausible and the way she wrote the protagonist, I didn’t care about her at all. She is very one dimensional. The best characters are ones you love even when they make choices you don’t love. If you don’t care about the main character, how can you like the book? In general, overhyped.

It is absolutely not worth your time. The story is really of a woman falling into mental illness and rather than address the issues we are meant to blame her. So angry I wasted my time on this book.

Hauntingly crisp, biting satire and whole lot of heart wrapped in trauma. 5 stars
  • Just, wow.

I wanted to like this more than I did. This reads as a takedown of Christianity through the lens of extreme white evangelicalism. Natalie, was so extremely crazy and unlikable. She's prejudiced, judgmental, and completely out of touch. If the goal was to create an unlikable, out-of-touch character, the author definitely succeeded at that. My issue is that it never moves beyond the rant of “I hate these religious ideologies that I’ve picked up”. She’s a crazy person who’s bound to the same ideologies she so desperately detest. I don't doubt that this version of religious trauma is real for many people, but as a novel it was just frustrating to sit with.

I was not expecting to like this book, but I couldn’t put it down. Intriguing and bewildering, yet thoroughly original and entertaining. Highly recommend.
  • Hard to like…

I struggled, to read this. The protagonist is hard to like... The plot is forced and the ending comes across as contrived. I knew the author had not been a parent long before half way, and I knew there was a political statement being made almost from the start.
