A draughts game in the Wylie home falls silent when David breaks into verse: “Oh, let the solid ground / Not fail beneath my feet.” The subject is love—and the family’s bachelor men are suddenly alarmed. In a snug Scottish household raised from a granite quarry, Maggie Wylie dreams of a grand romance while her brothers regard women as a risk best avoided. Then a penniless law student is found in their home, reading the books behind glass. The Wylies offer to pay for his education on one unusual condition: in five years, he must marry Maggie. As John Shand’s prospects brighten, the bargain draws Maggie into the life she has helped make possible—but will anyone see what she wants for herself?
