Description

“There it lay, the great pearl, perfect as the moon.”

Like his father and grandfather before him, Kino is a poor diver, gathering pearls from the gulf beds that once brought great wealth to the Kings of Spain and now provide Kino, Juana, and their infant son with meager subsistence. Then, on a day like any other, Kino emerges from the sea with a pearl as large as a sea gull's egg, as "perfect as the moon." With the pearl comes hope, the promise of comfort and of security....

A story of classic simplicity, based on a Mexican folk tale, The Pearl explores the secrets of man's nature, the darkest depths of evil, and the luminous possibilities of love.

  • A socialist pamphlet

I was expecting something of similar literary quality as "The old man and the sea", but instead this reads as a socialist pamphlet. The writing is obviously made into a forced story to play doctors, priests, and even 4 century ago spaniards as evil. And of course merchants are the worse and the story ends up with the moral that trying to have ambitions of progress is the worst thing in life. This is part of the socialist fallacies trying to convince western society to self-destruct, betray itself, and commit suicide, embracing marxism and become all poor and unproductive. A total absurdity that, as this is a teacher's recommendation book, is taught to children in school, to ruin their lives before they can fully develop their common sense, the best antidote against socialism. First and last reading of anything by Steinbeck from me.
