Description

A New York Times Bestseller

In this uplifting Holocaust survivor memoir in the vein of The Last Lecture and Man’s Search for Meaning, a survivor pays tribute to those who were lost by telling his story, sharing his wisdom, and living his best possible life.

Born in Leipzig, Germany, into a Jewish family, Eddie Jaku was a teenager when his world was turned upside-down. On November 9, 1938, during the terrifying violence of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, Eddie was beaten by SS thugs, arrested, and sent to a concentration camp with thousands of other Jews across Germany. Every day of the next seven years of his life, Eddie faced unimaginable horrors in Buchenwald, Auschwitz, and finally on a forced death march during the Third Reich’s final days. The Nazis took everything from Eddie—his family, his friends, and his country. But they did not break his spirit.

Against unbelievable odds, Eddie found the will to survive. Overwhelming grateful, he made a promise: he would smile every day in thanks for the precious gift he was given and to honor the six million Jews murdered by Hitler. Today, at 100 years of age, despite all he suffered, Eddie calls himself the “happiest man on earth.” In his remarkable memoir, this born storyteller shares his wisdom and reflects on how he has led his best possible life, talking warmly and openly about the power of gratitude, tolerance, and kindness. Life can be beautiful if you make it beautiful. With The Happiest Man on Earth, Eddie shows us how.

Filled with his insights on friendship, family, health, ethics, love, and hatred, and the simple beliefs that have shaped him, this inspirational story offers timeless lessons for readers of all ages, especially for young people today.

THIS IS A MUST READ FOR ANYONE SEEKING INFORMATION ON THE HOLOCAUST! In World War II the atrocities of the holocaust might be hard to accept but this book tells of cruelty ascribed by Hitler on Jewish citizens by a Jewish man who saw, experienced and survived it all. There is much sadness when you realize the horrors during this historic period. Yet, through it all this man tells of his survival through friendship, education, resourcefulness and hope. This is a tremendous book I definitely recommend and I commend Eddie for realizing this is a story that must be told, shared and never forgotten.

Being Jewish myself, but no family history of my family experiencing this horror. I do have memories of my maternal grandfather telling stories, while working at Ellis Island, to assist the Jews arriving by ship, to get their documents in order upon arrival. My mother remembers them coming to their apartment so he could help them too. I hope that we never have to face what you did Eddie! You are remarkable and a hero in my eyes!

This book needs to be required reading in all schools across the world, lest new generations forget how evil came to power, and otherwise decent people descended into a world of unfounded hatred. At first glance, learning of average German citizens participating in the attack on Jewish people makes me think our humanity is quite fragile. But learning of the will and determination of people like Eddie Jacu restores my faith that our humanity is incredibly resilient. I highly recommend this book.

If this book doesn’t hit you to your soul, make you forget your problems and motivate you to become a happier person with hope, I’m not sure anything can! It will also make you recognize that hate is growing in this world and hope, being happy and kind is the answer to defeat it!
  • The story is written as if you were having a conversation with this very special man.

The candor, warmth, and vulnerability of this author draw you in from beginning to end. It is a story that should be on everyone’s reading list. The Holocaust is an atrocity that needs to be talked about for all generations lest it be forgotten and to prevent it from being repeated. My heart is broken for all who suffered and died and grateful Eddie lived to tell his story.
