Very detailed and thorough account of everything related to the case. The Helter Skelter of Whitey Bulger lore, except without the Bugliosi lies and false narrative.

Broadcast journalist David Boeri spent more than a decade covering the criminal exploits of James "Whitey" Bulger, one of Boston's most notorious gangsters. This book focuses largely on Bulger's 2013 trial on racketeering and related charges, based on a 1994 indictment. According to Boeri and trial evidence presented in the 2002 and 2008 trials of retired FBI agent John Connally, Connally tipped Bulger about the indictment and Whitey became a fugitive. He was finally caught and arrested in California in June 2011. Boeri recaps the 2013 trial that attempted to link Bulger to 19 murders that occurred in the 197's and 80's. Although Boeri does an exceptional job of covering the trial, including the testimony of three of Bulger's closest associates, he frequently repeats information in successive chapters as if he expects to need to refresh the reader's memory. I found the repetitive descriptions to be unnecessarily redundant and distracting. Boeri also becomes obsessed with describing Bulger's reactions to the testimony of his former associates throughout the discussion of their time on the witness stand, Overall, I have to praise the author for his willingness to take on the FBI and the Department of Justice for the corrupt and negligent manner in which they handled Bulger during the two decades in which he served as a secret informant. I also commend Boeri for his objective and thoughtful approach to discussing the impact of Bulger's murders on the surviving family members.
